Who Are We?
We are the Gramercy-Stuyvesant Independent Democrats.
We are a part of the Democratic Party of New York City, though, as our name implies, we are very independent. Our club was founded by a group of volunteers from the heroic, but unsuccessful, campaign for McGovern for President in 1972, and the philosophy of progressive values and Party reform has guided us since that time.
Our club sponsors two District Leaders for Part A of the 74 th Assembly District. Our "part" is roughly one-fourth of the Assembly District, comprising all of Stuyvesant Town, along with several election districts in the Gramercy Park area and south of 14 th Street in the upper part of the Lower East Side. Our District Leaders are Myrna LePree, from Stuyvesant Town, and Tom Nooter, from East Midtown Plaza. One of the two State Committee representatives for the Assembly District, Sylvia Friedman, is also from our club.
Our club is open to anyone who wishes to join, and the meetings are all public. We hear from candidates for public and party offices and endorse for the Democratic Primary elections as well as for the general elections. All of our members participate in the process and have a vote. We also hear from speakers on important issues of the day, and take positions where appropriate. We also raise money by sponsoring an annual street fair, which is primarily used to provide emergency assistance to tenants in our neighborhood who are in danger of losing their homes.
We also stand for merit selection of judicial candidates. Unlike what you may have been reading about in Brooklyn on how judges are selected there, we in Manhattan have a system requiring the screening of Civil Court and Supreme Court judges by an independent panel made up of representatives of bar associations and community organizations. Our club will not endorse any candidate who has not been approved by the screening panel. Our club was in the forefront of the fight for this reform, and we have a well-deserved reputation for supporting candidates based on merit, rather than on other political considerations or loyalties.
Our philosophy is generally "liberal" or "progressive," and supportive of reforms in the Party which keep the process open and available to the broadest range of citizens. We hope you will join us so that you can be part of an exciting and important process of choosing our government and influencing our governmentís policies.
